Mathematics is compulsory for students in Years 7-10, but not compulsory in Years 11 and 12. To survive in the real world all students need basic numeracy skills. Studies in mathematics equip students with problem solving skills. These skills are in high demand in the workforce.
The Mathematics faculty endeavors to prepare all students and they are given the opportunity to study more abstract concepts and skills. For the more able, the Mathematics faculty participates in the Westpac Mathematics competition. The staff run Mathematics field days for students in Years 7-8 and 10. At the field days students work in groups to complete practical activities with Year 10 students completing their Authentic Assessment Task. In Year 9 students can attend an excursion to Wet'n'Wild Sydney.
As Mathematics is a subject which builds on previous knowledge it is advisable for students to practise skills learned as part of their homework. In the Senior School a variety of Mathematics courses are available:
Mathematics General Prelimiary (Year 11) (2 unit)
- Mathematics General 2 (Year 12), ATAR
- Mathematics General 1 (Year 12), Non ATAR
Mathematics (2 unit)
Mathematics Extension 1
Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only)
All of the above courses are solid and generally not suited for students with standard mathematics background in the junior school. There are alternatives on the Mathematics Line in Year 11. Some of these contain work involving everyday Mathematics.
